How to care for your Strelitzia Nicolai?
The Strelitzia is a sun loving plant and does appreciate a few hours of direct sunlight. A spot with bright to moderate amount of light would be best. When you start noticing black patches on the leaves, it’s probably a sunburn.
A thorough watering every once in a while is needed for your Strelitzia Nicolai, especially during the hot summer months. Do keep in mind not to let the soil stay soggy, which can cause root rot. The soil may dry out quite a bit in between waterings. Watering about once every other week should be fine. Strelitzia can handle a bit of drought much better than an excess of water.
To avoid soggy soil a well draining soil mixture is key for you Strelitzia Nicolai. Try mixing a good quality potting soil with perlite or even some sand.
Strelitzia species are a tropical plants which native to tropical areas in South America. You can imagine that’s why the Strelitzia Nicolai loves a higher than average humidity. Try keeping your humidity around 60% – 65% at a minimum.
In Spring and Summer you can give some fertilizer to your Strelitzia Nicolai. During the rest of the year fertilizing the plant is not recommended. Before using the fertilizer always check and follow the instructions given on the bottle.
Repotting your Strelitzia can be a bit of a hassle, especially when you have a big plant. In that case repotting your plant every other year is fine. Make sure the new pot is at lease 20% bigger. This will give the roots, and ultimately, room and energy to grow. If you have a smaller plant which is growing fast you could even repot it every year.
