How to care for your Beaucarnea Recurvata?
The Beaucarnea is native to tropical and subtropical regions in Asia and Africa. Therefor it is logical that you love some good but indirect light. In the early morning or late afternoon it’s ok if the plant gets some direct sunlight. If you place the plant in a spot with more shade, it should be fine. However the growth go even slower.
Beaucarnea Recurvata has a thick stem which can store water in periods of droughts. However the plants water needs do change by the season. In winter time watering your Beaucarnea once a month is sufficient. During very warm hot summer days the plant will enjoy a good amount of water once a week. In the period in between water your plant according to its needs, probably about 2 or 3 times a month.
Beaucarnea loves a good draining soil mixture that doesn’t stay too soggy. Use some quality potting soil, mixing it up with some perlite or even sand. Alternately get your plant a pre-made mixture from the garden centre for cacti and succulents.
Humidity isn’t such an important factor when caring for your Beaucarnea Recurvata. Just make sure it’s out of draughts and away from the heather in the winter. When the humidity is too low the top ends of the leaves will turn brown.
In the summer months you can fertilize your plant. In the colder and winter months no fertiliser is needed. Please always check the instructions on your own fertiliser if it has other care instructions.
Beaucarnea are not very fast growing plants. Therefore repotting regularly is not necessary. A repot once every two years should be the minimum.
Beaucarnea are considered not toxic to animals or humans.
